Pain in your jaw or the sound of popping or cracking when you open or close your mouth may mean you have TMD, (previously referred to as TMJ). TMD can cause a lot of discomfort and pain.
If you suffer from TMD (temporomandibular disorder), your pain may range from mild to severe or anywhere in between. A TM disorder causes pain in your jaw muscles and/or jaw joints, making it difficult to open and close your mouth and chew.
If you experience the following signs or symptoms of TMD, it's time to book an appointment with Dr. Larry Schmakel:
Teeth grinding, or Bruxism, is very common. Many patients grind their teeth, and it can cause several issues and problems. If you experience pain in your jaw, or any of the following symptoms, it may be time for a visit to Sylvania Smile Design!
People grind their teeth for many different reasons, including: stress and anxiety, sleep disorders, or an abnormal bite. (Read more from the ADA on teeth grinding.)
If you've been diagnosed with TMD or you grind your teeth, a bite guard may relieve your discomfort.
Bite guards can also help if you suffer from pain in your jaw, face, neck, or ears. Ask yourself: Do I clench or grind my teeth while I sleep? If so, a custom fit bite guard can help relieve your pain!
Our bite guards fit comfortably on the upper or lower teeth to lessen the stress and pressure of grinding. Please feel free to ask us if a bite guard can help protect your teeth and jaw.
What is a bite adjustment? A bite adjustment may be helpful if you suffer from loose or shifting teeth, headaches or jaw pain. If your bite is not aligned properly, your teeth are affected, as is your overall health.
Do I need a bite adjustment? A bite adjustment may be helpful if you suffer from: loose or shifting teeth; headaches, jaw pain, facial pain, and pain in the mouth; pain while chewing, or opening and closing the jaw; and grinding or popping noises in the jaw.
Is a bite adjustment effective? If you suffer from TMD, a bite guard/orthotic, along with a bite adjustment may substantially reduce or totally eliminate your symptoms.
