Do you snore at night? You may have sleep apnea!
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a life threatening sleep disorder characterized by a pause or complete stoppage of one's breathing. The gold standard for treating sleep apnea is the CPAP. Around 50% of sleep apnea patients can't tolerate their CPAP and stop wearing it. That's where we can help. Many FDA approved oral appliances are covered to some extent by one's medical insurance. In mild sleep apnea, (AHI from 5-15), Oral Appliance Therapy can by just as effective as using the CPAP. It can also help the mild to severe patients who can't tolerate their CPAP machines. Moderate sleep apnea increases risk of death by 17%. Severe sleep apnea increases risk of death by up to 46%!
Snoring can be very loud and irritating, and one-half of people that snore loudly have OSA. Snoring can be reduced or eliminated by a custom oral appliance made by Dr. Schmakel. Read more from the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. (Dr. Schmakel has been a member for over 10 years.)
